Cary firefighters rescued a Laurel Park Elementary School student who had climbed 40 feet up a tree and couldn’t get down, local authorities said Wednesday.

A Cary Police Department spokesperson said authorities received a report of a child stuck in a tree at the school on Laura Duncan Road at about 11:15 a.m.

The pine tree was swaying in the wind, WRAL reported.

Cary firefighters used a ladder truck to execute the “high-angle rescue,” according to the spokesperson and got the child out of the tree safely.

The child, whose age and sex were not released, was not injured and soon returned to class. A police spokesperson did not know how long the child was in the tree.

Principal Charelle Lovett let parents know early Wednesday afternoon.

“This morning, a student experienced a crisis after climbing a tree on campus, requiring emergency assistance,” she wrote in an email. “Our staff promptly called for help, and the Cary Fire Department was quick to arrive and provide aid.”
