What’s causing burning smell in Garner? Fire crews at recycling plant to find out
Raleigh stormwater and hazmat crews are assessing if an outdoor fire at a southeast Raleigh recycling plant has caused any environmental issues.
At 1:45 a.m. Saturday, 10 Raleigh Fire Department units responded to the fire at the 2300 block of Garner Road, the Raleigh firefighters’ union, Local 548, said in a Saturday Facebook post. 2310 Garner Road is the location of Foss Recycling.
The Town of Garner posted at 10 a.m. Saturday that Garner fire crews were also on scene and “the smell of the burning electrical products is present all over the Garner area.”
The fire is contained, but units are still on scene to ensure the fire is fully extinguished, Raleigh Fire Division Chief David Bagwell told The News & Observer Saturday. Bagwell said the fire burned in a large debris pile the size of a football field.
As of 12 p.m., crews have not found anything toxic or dangerous or determined the cause of the fire, Bagwell said. While Bagwell did not say exactly what caused the particular smell, he noted Foss Recycling is a metal recycling plant. The facility has been the scene of small fires in the past, but nothing to this degree, Bagwell said.
Several Facebook users noted seeing smoke in Garner. One commenter said they could smell smoke from Lake Benson, over six miles from the fire.
