9 people shot, 2 dead, after two weeks of violence in Wake County

Raleigh police arrested two suspects in a fatal weekend shooting, and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating another killing, the two agencies reported Tuesday.

The fatal shootings were among at least nine shootings reported in Wake County in the past two weeks.

Police charged Damon Demont Nicholson, 38, with murder and Andreal Danielle Redmond, 27, with accessory after the fact in the death of Elliott Cheatham. The 43-year-old was shot on South Blount Street Sunday and died of his injuries Monday.

Nicholson was charged with felonious restraint and assault with a deadly weapon last year. Redmond does not have prior violent charges in Wake County.

Meanwhile, the Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that happened on Swift Creek Lane, in the Green Spring Valley Mobile Home Park on Tuesday morning.

The person who was shot, whose name has not been released was taken to WakeMed, where he died, according to a news release.

In the other shootings:

On Sunday a woman was shot on Prospect Avenue, just south of downtown and taken to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Friday, police responded to gunshots on Merrywood Drive in East Raleigh. Minutes later, officers were dispatched to WakeMed after a gunshot victim walked in with non-life-threatening injuries.

On June 15, police found a woman shot on Western Boulevard. Minutes later, police responded to WakeMed after reports of another walk-in gunshot victim, who police believe had been shot on Valley Stream Drive.

Hunter Michael Hall, 22, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, misdemeanor drug possession and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury in connection with the shooting on Western Boulevard.

On June 14, police heard gunshots near Trawick Road and Lake Woodard Drive and found a two-vehicle wreck in which one driver had been shot. The victim was taken to WakeMed.

On June 12, police responded to a shooting on Mass Rock Drive and found a man with a gunshot wound.

On June 11 police responded to a shooting in the 5900 block of Poyner Anchor Lane and found another man who had been shot.

Most of the shootings did not occur close to where most of the recent protests over George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis or Confederate monuments have taken place in downtown Raleigh over the past three weeks.

Only three people have been arrested in connection with the shootings.

There were 10 homicides in Raleigh this year as of Tuesday, compared to 14 by the same date last year, according to the Police Department
