911 caller reported person with gun before fatal shooting by police in Roxboro

Roxboro police found a loaded, sawed-off shotgun at the scene after shooting a man Friday, the police chief said.

David Brooks Jr., 45, died of his injuries, Police Chief David Hess said in a press conference Friday evening.

The shotgun did not belong to the Roxboro Police Department, Hess said. The weapon is considered a “weapon of mass destruction” and is not legal in North Carolina.

Two veteran officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay, Hess said, but he would not name the officers. No officer was injured in the incident.

Hess also would not say whether both officers fired their guns and how many bullets were shot.

The State Bureau of Investigation will review the shooting, which is common practice for shootings involving police officers, Hess said.

The Police Department does not have body-camera footage, but its police cars do have cameras.

“We are currently determining the status of video from this incident,” Hess said. “We will talk to with the family and SBI before making a decision on whether or not that video can be released.”

911 caller reported person with gun

Police say they responded to a 911 call reporting a person with a gun walking down Old Durham Road, close to a Dollar General Store on Weeks Drive, according to a release from the department.

Hess said he could not say whether Brooks entered the store with the shotgun.

“Shots were fired” moments after police arrived, the news release stated.

“This is a difficult day for our city,” Hess said in a statement. “Please be patient as this process begins.”

The man’s cousin told ABC11, The News & Observer’s media partner, he was picking up some things from the store.
