Woman killed when her car hit a tree off Raleigh’s Western Boulevard

A woman who died in a single-car crash on Raleigh’s Western Boulevard on Saturday morning left the road at a high rate of speed and hit a tree, according to a report released by police late Sunday.

Stephanie Yamel Kelly of Raleigh was going east on Western at an estimated 60 mph when she entered a curve between Boylan Avenue and South Saunders Street, according to the report. Kelly did not appear to brake before her Kia hit the tree head on and then went down an embankment.

The speed limit on that stretch of Western is 45 mph.

Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Raleigh Police Department news release. The police report said she had been seen driving “erratically” before the crash but said it was unknown whether alcohol was a factor.

The accident took place about 8:10 a.m. The eastbound lanes of Western Boulevard were closed until about noon, police said.
