Wake County murder suspect and his alleged victim faced charges together two years ago
A suspect in a Friday evening homicide and his alleged victim were both charged two years ago in connection to a fatal hit-and-run, according to court records and a TV news report from the time.
On Saturday, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office announced that deputies had charged Christopher Alex Small with killing Logan Carl Jones at a home in the 2900 block of Jones Franklin Road, near Cary.
Two years ago, in August 2019, Jones and Small were reportedly together in a vehicle that struck and killed a pedestrian, then left the scene.
WRAL reported at the time that Jones, the driver, faced a felony charge of hit-and-run resulting in a death. Small, the passenger, was arrested about a week later and charged with fleeing an accident resulting in death.
According to the report, Jones told Cary police he left the scene thinking he had hit an animal. When he later saw paramedics there, he walked back and learned he had hit a pedestrian. Police had received calls that a woman who appeared to be intoxicated had been weaving through traffic and lying in the road in the area.
Court system data reviewed by The News & Observer Saturday confirm that both men faced criminal charges on dates corresponding with the news report. Those records indicate that the charges have not been resolved.
On Friday, deputies found Jones dead of a gunshot wound. They were responding to a report of a shooting at a home in the 2900 block of Jones Franklin Road, spokesman Eric Curry wrote in a news release.
One of the three homes on that block is the address Jones has used on his voter registration, according to state records.
Curry, the sheriff’s office spokesman, said witnesses told investigators that the two men had been arguing before the shooting. Small fled, but later turned himself in to authorities, Curry said.
Small was booked into Wake County Detention Center on a murder charge about 10:30 a.m., according to jail records.
