NC State student dies after being hit by car near campus, police say

Update: “Police charge driver in accident involving 21-year-old NC State student near campus”

A student at N.C. State University has died after he was hit by a car near campus, police said.

Benjamin DeRose, 21, suffered serious injuries in an accident early on Sunday morning, according to the Raleigh Police Department.

DeRose had been a student at N.C. State since the fall of 2018, university spokesperson Mick Kulikowski said in an email. He was majoring in microbiology and was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi.

DeRose attended Sanderson High School in Raleigh, according to his Facebook page.

Police said he was hit by a car near the intersection of Varsity Drive and Crest Road at approximately 2:45 a.m. Sunday.

The car, a 2008 Acura, was traveling southeast on Varsity Drive and was turning right onto Crest Road when it struck DeRose, according to an accident report released by Raleigh police.

DeRose was running across Crest Road at “a point where there is no crosswalk, not at the intersection,” when he was struck, the report stated.

The driver, who has been identified, has not been charged as police investigate the collision, police spokesperson Laura Hourigan said.

An online fundraiser on the website GoFundMe had raised more than $38,000 as of Wednesday afternoon for funeral expenses and a memorial scholarship at N.C. State, the website page states.

“We care a lot for the DeRose family and Ben is going to be greatly missed,” the fundraiser page states. “He touched everyone in a positive way and shined a light in this world.”

A vigil for DeRose will be held outside of the Talley Student Union at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to WRAL.
