Police have identified a man who died after being shot early Sunday as 24-year-old Kaleak LaShawn Sanford of Durham.

Officers responded to a report of a gunshot wound in the 2300 block of Lednum Street, north of Interstate 85, shortly after 1:30 a.m., said Lt. Jackie Werner of the Durham Police Department.

They found Sanford lying outside suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. He was taken to a hospital where he died a short while later, according to a news release.

Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators at 919-560-4440, ext. 29322, or Durham Crimestoppers at 919-683-1200.

Crimestoppers offers cash rewards for information that leads to felony arrests. Callers do not have to identify themselves.

Sunday’s fatal shooting came after another shooting on Drew Street on Friday night, in which one man was found dead and two men were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police are asking for anyone with information in that shooting to contact the department as well.

As of Nov. 6, a total of 35 people had been fatally shot in Durham in 2021, according to data provided by Durham police.

That is more than the number of people shot in the two previous years by that date: 24 in 2020 and 30 people in 2019.
