Raleigh police charge 25-year-old man with murder in northwest Raleigh killing

Police have arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 36-year-old man Sunday morning in northwest Raleigh.

Vance Louis Winston IV, 25, is charged with murder in the death of Kenneth Edward Scott Jr., according to a Raleigh Police Department news release.

Officers responded to the shooting near the 3900 block of Haresnipe Court off U.S. 70 at about 9:30 a.m., according to the Police Department.

Winston was on probation after being convicted in Iredell County of misdemeanor assault on a female in a Jan. 3 incident, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety database.

As of Sunday, there had been 26 homicides by firearm in the city this year, according to figures provided by Raleigh Police Department spokesperson Laura Hourigan. That was up from 22 by the same time last year and 19 the year before that.

Reported gun-related crimes in Raleigh are up nearly 21%, with 801 incidents this year compared to 663 by this time last year.

The department offered few additional details on Sunday’s shooting but asked that anyone with information call Raleigh CrimeStoppers at 919-834-HELP or to go to the CrimeStoppers website.
