4 pound puppy stolen from APS of Durham animal shelter is returned
A small puppy taken from the APS of Durham animal shelter on Club Boulevard last week has been returned, the organization announced Saturday.
“Our community rallied to help ensure our precious, tiny pup, Lazuli, was returned to the shelter safe and sound,” the APS said in a news release.
The 7-week old, spayed female pup weighing just 4.4 pounds was taken around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The agency sent out alerts asking for help finding Lazuli, who looks like a German shepherd-boxer mix, with brown brindle, black and white fur. She has a white muzzle and a white patch on her forehead, chest and paws.
“We sincerely appreciate all your well wishes, messages of concern, and help spreading the word,” the APS stated. “It seems that this community approach played a part in the person who took her to come forward with the pup and admit what they’d done.
The APS did not say if the person who took the dog was charged with a crime. The News & Observer has contacted the Durham Police Department for more information.
Lazuli was returned to the adoption floor Saturday, along with her remaining litter mates Topaz, Citrine and Garnet.
The shelter is closed on Sundays and reopens at 10:30 Monday.
