Woman charged in Highway 540 hit-and-run near Apex that killed 35-year-old man

A Sanford woman has been charged with fatally hitting a 35-year-old man on Highway 540 on Thursday morning after she called authorities on Friday to acknowledge responsibility, the State Highway Patrol said.

Randi Leah Sheets, 39, was charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle in connection with the collision, which occurred on the southbound N.C. 540 toll road, south of Apex, just before 7 a.m. on Thursday, Sgt. R. Eric Mellott said in a news release.

The Highway Patrol first reported the hit-and-run in a tweet Thursday night, and said troopers were looking for a 2006-2013 Chevrolet Impala with damage on the front passenger side, and the passenger side mirror.

On Saturday, Mellott identified the pedestrian who died as Billy Dquan Jose McNeill of Fayetteville.

Mellott said Sheets called the Highway Patrol Friday morning to acknowledge her role in the hit-and-run, and said news stories about the crash had prompted her to call.

Sheets is being held on a $50,000 secure bond.
