Man and baby boy killed in triple shooting in Raleigh
A man and baby boy were shot and killed Tuesday night at a North Raleigh apartment complex off Spring Forest Road.
Detectives arrested Natanael Ezequiel Baez, 22, and charged him with murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
Officers arrived at the complex on Shanda Drive around 11:38 p.m. Tuesday.
They found the baby, a 23-month-old boy, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man, 27-year-old Robert Thomas, died from his injuries after being taken to a hospital.
A 27-year-old woman who was also shot was treated for serious but not life-threatening injuries, police said in a news release.
The deaths were the second and third fatal shootings in Raleigh on Tuesday, after a man shot on New Bern Avenue Tuesday afternoon died from his injuries.
As of May 25, there had been 18 homicides in Raleigh, including 16 fatal shootings, according to police.
Those numbers were up from 13 homicides, including 10 fatal shootings, in 2021 and nine homicides, including seven fatal shootings, in 2020.
911 call released
The baby’s mother told a man who called 911 that her son had been shot in the head, according to 911 audio requested by The News & Observer.
Screams were heard after shots rang out in the apartment complex, the 911 caller told the dispatcher.
“This woman ... she’s saying her 1-year-old baby was shot in the head,” the caller said. “I heard like, around 10 [gunshots], maybe seven,” the caller said as a woman screamed and whimpered in the background..
