Gunfire near Wilson Little League complex puts tournament games on hold
A North Carolina Little League tournament was put on hold Sunday after multiple gunshots were fired near the host stadium in Wilson.
Multiple Little League groups and the state Little League office confirmed the shots on social media accounts.
The Wilson Times reported that bullets struck an unoccupied parked car, but that no one was injured by the shooting.
Wilson’s Gillette Baseball Complex is hosting the Little League state tournament for children aged 8 and 9. The shooting occurred Sunday morning, according to a social media post from the South Durham Little League, which said its team was playing Lake Norman at the time of the shooting.
“While details are scarce at this point, we have confirmed all SDLL players, coaches, and families are safe and accounted for,” the South Durham Little League posted on its Facebook page. “We hope this has the best outcome possible.”
Games scheduled for Sunday were canceled following the gunshots.
Wilson Police spokesperson Steven Stroud told The News & Observer that officers responded to a report of an active shooter around 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Once there officers determined there was no active shooter, but that a car had been shot multiple times. The Wilson Police Department continues to investigate the incident.
