The North Carolina State Highway Patrol briefly pursued a 9-year-old behind the wheel of a vehicle on Thursday.

Troopers were alerted that a 9-year-old boy with special needs had “taken a motor vehicle” and was driving on Old Milburnie Road in Knightdale, in the eastern part of Wake County, highway patrol spokesman Sgt. Christopher Knox said.

The identity of the minor was not released. Authorities did not say to whom the vehicle belonged.

Troopers spotted a Mini Cooper being driven recklessly, and began to follow it.

The child driver failed to stop for emergency equipment and eventually traveled off the road to the right. The vehicle hit a curb and a manhole.

The vehicle then stopped on the right shoulder of the road with minor damage, the State Highway Patrol said in a statement.

It’s not the first time that the boy has taken a car, according to the boy’s mother, reported CBS17.

The child was not injured, but was transported to WakeMed Pediatric for evaluation. The State Highway Patrol isn’t seeking any charges, Knox said.
