Man shot to death in southern Durham, police say

Durham police are investigating a fatal shooting late Thursday night in southern Durham.

It was the second of two fatal shootings that day in the city.

Officers responded to a disturbance with a weapon call in the 200 block of Kent Lake Drive at 11:57 p.m., according to a news release. The location is near Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and east of Hope Valley Farms.

They found a man, whose name and age were not released, who had been shot. Emergency Medical Services workers pronounced him dead at the scene

The shooting does not appear to be random, the release stated.

Police provided no other information such as a possible motive for the shooting or any information about possible suspect(s).

Earlier Thursday, police responded to a fatal shooting on Wabash Street near the McDougald Terrace housing community in the eastern part of the city.

On Friday they identified the person killed as 18-year-old Wahid Downey of Durham but provided no other details.

Shootings, homicides down in 2022

The two shootings came as the Durham City Council on Thursday discussed multiple efforts to fight gun violence in the Bull City, including the pending launch of ShotSpotter, a surveillance service that alerts police to the sound of possible gunfire.

As of Aug. 13, a reported 148 people had been shot in Durham, not counting accidents and suicides, according to police statistics. That was down from 157 in 2021 and 182 in 2020, by the same date.

Twenty-three people had been fatally shot, which was down from 26 last year but up from 20 the year before, by the same date.
