911 call released in fatal shooting of 61-year-old woman in Raleigh’s Oberlin Village

A sobbing 911 caller says he was defending himself in what Raleigh police are calling a domestic incident that left a 61-year-old women dead Wednesday night.

Officers responded to the Mayview Apartments on Parker Street in Oberlin Village around 9:15 p.m.

They found Cynthia Ann Surles suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to a hospital, where she died, police said in a news release.

No charges had been filed as of Thursday afternoon, police said.

Parker Street is near Jaycee Park between Oberlin Road and Wade Avenue.

The Mayview Apartments are owned by the Raleigh Housing Authority, according to the agency’s website.

‘She’s been shot’

In the 911 call at 9:11 p.m. Wednesday, the caller can be heard sobbing, screaming and pleading for help.

The caller, who is not identified, was also recorded saying he “didn’t mean it” and asking, “why would you do that?”

The caller continues to say Surles shot at him, though he was not hit and that he had to defend himself.

The dispatcher told the caller to go outside with his hands up as paramedics arrive at the location.

According to the audio, the victim was in her bedroom.

Some information was redacted from the call and the caller’s voice was altered to disguise their natural voice, according to Lt. Jason Borneo, a spokesperson for the Raleigh Police Department.
