Woman killed in hit-and-run in Downtown Raleigh. Suspected driver is charged.

A woman died early Thursday morning near downtown Raleigh after a car struck her, according to the Raleigh Police Department.

Around 12:07 a.m., officers responded to the scene after a person was hit just south of downtown on South Saunders Street at Wilmington Street.

Police say the woman was walking outside of the travel lanes on South Saunders Street.

The driver, who fled the scene after the hit, was later identified as James Douglas Virgin, 32, police say.

His car was found by police when one found in Garner matched the description of the vehicle. The car had damage to the front end.

Virgin has been charged with driving while impaired, felony hit and run causing death, and failure to maintain a lane control, according to a news release. Police did not say if Virgin was under the influence of alcohol or another substance.

He has been transported to the Wake County Detention Center.

The woman’s identity has not been released and the investigation remains active.

This is Raleigh’s second pedestrian hit-and-run death in 24 hours. Raleigh police are also looking for a driver who struck and killed a 76-year-old man walking near Carroll Middle School on Six Forks Road early Wednesday.

Police have not identified the vehicle they’re searching for or any details about the driver.
