Suspect arrested in shooting death of 34-year-old woman near Durham’s Hillside Park
Durham police have made an arrest after a woman was found shot to death Thursday morning near Hillside Park.
Durham police announced Friday afternoon that they have arrested and charged 35-year-old Lamin Amie Njie with carrying a concealed gun, first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in relation to the shooting death.
He is currently in the Durham County Jail with no bond, said Crystal Price, a spokesperson for the Durham Police Department.
On Friday, police identified the slain woman as 34-year-old Julie Rebecca Lindsey.
Police found Lindsey in the 1300 block of South Roxboro Street around 1:40 a.m. Thursday She was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release.
The release and Friday’s update releasing Lindsey’s name did not say how many times Lindsey was shot or describe her injuries.
“This is an active investigation and there are no further details at this time,” the Police Department told The News & Observer in an email.
The location is by Hillside Park south of the Durham Freeway.
ABC11, The N&O’s media partner, reported that police closed off part of the park as they investigated the death.
Shootings and homicides down in Durham
The killing comes as total shootings are slightly down this year compared to this time last year, police statistics show.
As of Oct. 8, 197 people had been shot in Durham this year, including 33 fatally and 164 non-fatally.
Police report 34 total homicides in the city as of Oct. 8 this year, down from 39 by the same time last year, but up from 24 the year before that.
All told, violent crime in Durham, which also includes rape, robberies and aggravated assaults, was down 8.3% from the same time last year, police statistics show.
