Police identified a man shot to death in East Durham late Monday night as 25-year-old Tyler Young of Durham.

Officers dispatched to Gary Street around 11:45 p.m. found Young, who was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release.

On Nov. 30, Durham Police arrested Marcus Keith Anthony Woods, 27, of Durham, and charged him with murder. Woods is a non-sworn employee with the Durham Police Department.

Durham Police previously said they arrested and charged Kenneth Dewayne Cates, 51, with murder “based on an independent eyewitness identification.”

But on Dec. 1, Durham Police said Cates was not a suspect in the homicide, which they learned after “continued work by Durham Police Department investigators.”

The Durham District Attorney was contacted, and the charges were dismissed. Cates was released from the Durham County jail within 24 hours of his arrest, police said in a release Dec. 1.

Police have not provided details about the suspect or motive.

This was the second fatal shooting in Durham in a week. On Nov. 15, a 16-year-old was shot and killed in the McDougald Terrace area. The teen’s name has not been released.

There have been 650 shooting incidents in Durham this year and 214 people who have been shot, according to the Police Department’s latest crime statistics. As of Nov. 5, there had been 35 fatal shootings in the city.

Anyone with information about Monday night’s shooting is asked to call Investigator J. Sokal at 919-560-4582 ext. 29238 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
