Durham police release name of man fatally shot Sunday night east of downtown

Durham police on Wednesday identified a man shot to death Sunday night as 38-year-old Gregory Newsome of Durham.

Police found Newsome near the intersection of Fay and Juniper streets around 8 p.m., according to a Durham Police Department news release. The area is just east of downtown.

He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A funeral for Newsome will be held Feb. 18 at the Holloway Memorial Funeral Home on 2502 N.C. 55, according to an online obituary.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m., and the funeral will begin afterward.

Sunday’s shooting comes after shootings in Durham declined last year, with 247 people shot, 41 of them fatally, according to police statistics.

Those numbers were down from 278 people shot with 44 fatalities in 2021.
