Raleigh police file charges against man who accidentally shot himself at Crabtree mall

Raleigh police announced Monday they have charged a man who accidentally shot himself at Crabtree Valley Mall on Saturday night.

Allan Osvaldo Hernandez, 22, is accused of discharging a firearm in the city limits and carrying a concealed weapon in connection with the incident.

Police say he shot himself as mall visitors were running from a loud noise around 8:24 p.m. Police don’t know the cause of the noise, according to a Raleigh Police Department news release.

The man was moving toward safety when he shot himself, the release states. He was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

Crabtree Valley Mall’s code of conduct prohibits “weapons of any type, in view or otherwise” on mall property and requires all visitors to consent to “a reasonable search for weapons of any type at any time.”

The News & Observer has contacted police for more information, including the possible source of the loud noise that sent shoppers running, and will update this story when we receive a response.
