Durham man charged with murder in death of coworker Monday morning

Durham police are investigating a fatal shooting on Glenn School Road.

Durham police have charged a man with killing a coworker Monday morning at a store along Glenn School Road.

According to police, a man was shot in a business on the 1500 block of Glenn School Road, which is near Geer Street in northeastern Durham, just after 9 a.m.

On Monday afternoon, police identified the man as Byron Lamont Gainey, of Durham. He was 35 years old.

Gainey was taken to a hospital where he died, police said in a news release.

Saquan Evans, 42, of Durham, has been charged with murder in his death, police announced Monday afternoon.

Media outlets reported the business is a Dollar Tree store in a shopping center.

A preliminary investigation found two employees were arguing inside the store when one shot the other, the release stated.

On Monday morning, police took a Evans into custody for questioning. He is being held at the Durham County jail.

At least 13 people have been fatally shot this year, including two teenage boys who were killed near Brogden Middle School in March.
