An early morning street race Friday resulted in a crash and a 25-year-old woman being charged by police.

The crash happened before 2:30 a.m. on Lake Wheeler Road, close to Centennial Parkway near where the State Farmers Market is located.

Jada Ballen, who drove a 2015 Chevy Malibu with a female passenger in the crash, was arrested and charged with felony serious injury by vehicle, the Raleigh Police Department said in a news release.

Ballen is alleged to have raced a 2007 Honda Accord driven by Jocelynn Morrison, 24, heading eastbound on Centennial Parkway.

Police say Morrison lost control of her vehicle and sideswiped Ballen, traveled through a grass median and barreled across the intersection of Lake Wheeler Road. She crashed into a tree, spun and then struck a second tree before stopping.

Morrison was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Ballen was able to control her vehicle and stop on the side of the road.

The crash is under investigation, and it is unknown if additional charges are pending in the incident.

Last month, a 33-year-old man was killed in a street racing crash in Raleigh on Atlantic Avenue. That crash involved three vehicles and sent two people to the hospital, police said previously.

Manuel Antonio Cerrone, 30, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, felony hit and run causing serious injury or death, and misdemeanor death by vehicle, according to a Raleigh Police Department news release.
