4th sibling in Marin Sotelo family charged in connection with killing of Wake County deputy

One month after his brother briefly escaped from a Virginia jail, a Winston-Salem man faces charges in connection with the death of Wake County Sheriff’s Deputy Ned Byrd.

Rolando Marin Sotelo has been charged with accessory after the fact in the August 2022 shooting death, according to court documents.

Rolando is the fourth Marin Sotelo sibling to face charges related to Byrd’s death.

In August, his brothers Arturo and Alder Marin Sotelo were charged with murder after eluding police for several days.

Byrd was shot multiple times and killed on August 11 while on patrol with his K9 companion Sasha. Byrd was 48.

Soon after their arrest, Alder pleaded guilty to federal gun charges, leading him to be housed at the Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville, Virginia.

On April 30, Alder escaped from the jail, and fled in a a 2003 Ford Mustang. He led authorities on a multi-state manhunt before he was eventually captured in his home state of Guerrero, Mexico, on May 4.

On May 2, authorities arrested Alder, Arturo and Rolando’s sister Adriana Marin Sotelo for allegedly providing Alder with the getaway car.

On May 9, the FBI recovered the Mustang Alder allegedly used in his escape.

Court documents show that Rolando is currently being held on a $1 million bond.
