A juvenile has been taken into custody in a Wake County murder case.

On Wednesday, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check at the home of Jerry Hicks on Old Milburnie Road in eastern Wake County, according to a news release from the WCSO. Hicks’ family requested the check because they had not heard from him.

Deputies found the man dead.

Evidence discovered during the initial scene investigation revealed that Hick’s death was the result of a homicide, the sheriff’s office said. He was 71.

Investigators identified a juvenile as a suspect and took the juvenile into custody after filing a juvenile petition for murder.

“First responders observed wounds inconsistent with a natural death. To preserve the integrity of the investigation, details will be released at the appropriate time,” she wrote in an email to The News & Observer.
