Raleigh man killed, teenage girl injured in two Durham shootings

The Durham Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Raynor Street Thursday afternoon.

Durham police are investigating two Thursday shootings, including one at a bus stop mid-afternoon in which a man from Raleigh later died.

Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert as well as an officer reporting shots in the 1000 block of Raynor Street around 3:30 p.m., according to a Durham Police Department news release. Shotspotter is the gunshot surveillance system the city is trying out for a year.

They found a man who had been shot. EMS workers took him to the hospital, where he died, the release stated.

Police identified the man Friday morning as 43-year-old Benjamin Francois Morris of Raleigh.

The Police Department has released no other information, including about possible suspects. Media outlets reported the shooting occurred by a bus stop near The Village Shopping Center.

As of July 15, a total of 104 people had been shot in Durham, 23 of them fatally.

Thirty-nine of those shot were 20 years old or under; 24 of them were 17 or younger.

Total shootings were down from 130 and 127 during the prior two years.

The shooting was one of at least two Thursday, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s reporting partner.

Officers responded to the 2000 block of House Avenue around 8:45 p.m. and found a teenage girl who had been shot. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The police department has not released the girl’s age or condition or provided any details about that shooting.
