Southeast Raleigh High will stay closed Wednesday, 2 days after fatal stabbing

Southeast Raleigh High School will remain closed for a second day in a row following the fatal stabbing of a student on campus Monday.

In an announcement posted on the school’s website, the school said it will be closed Wednesday to provide staff additional time to prepare for the return of the 1,400 students. All after-school activities are also canceled.

“Know that we are being thoughtful and intentional and working closely with our Student Support Services team and the district’s Crisis Response team to ensure we have the appropriate resources and processes in place to help our students and staff as we navigate this challenging time together,” Eddie Harden, the school’s principal, said in the message.

The school was on a Code Red lockdown for most of Monday following a fight involving multiple students that led to a 15-year-old student being fatally stabbed and a 16-year-old suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

A 14-year-old has been charged with murder. His mother says she warned the school ahead of time on Monday that he was in danger of being attacked by other students.

The school was closed on Tuesday to allow students and staff to process what happened.

Lunch will be provided Wednesday to students

The school will offer an optional grab-and-go hot lunch meal for students on Wednesday. Students who would like lunch should come to the bus loop off of Creech Road and come to the cafeteria doors between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The Southeast Raleigh YMCA will open its building to host any students Wednesday. Lunch will be provided.

Students who would like to go to the Southeast Raleigh YMCA can go anytime between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Students should sign in at the front desk and will be asked to provide an emergency contact name and phone number.

Even though the school is closed, students can call the front office Wednesday at 919-856-2800 to talk to someone to get additional support.

Harden said additional information regarding plans for students returning to campus will be shared Wednesday afternoon with families.
