Raleigh police charge 2 men with murder in 2 fatal weekend shootings

Two men have been charged with murder in two unrelated fatal shootings in Raleigh on Saturday.

On Wednesday, Raleigh police said Montravius Malik Montgomery, 29, was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in the killing of 28-year-old Steven Andrea Jones II, according to police and other reports.

On Thursday, police said Elder Nahun Banegas-Mencia, 18, was charged with murder in a fatal shooting on Quail Hollow Drive.

In the first shooting on Saturday, police responded to a reported shooting at 1:11 p.m. in the 5400 block of Rock Quarry Road and found Jones II with a single gunshot wound. He later died at the hospital.

ABC11, The News & Observer’s news partner, reported Jones walked into a Dollar General store after being shot nearby. The store is in a small shopping strip surrounded by other businesses.

Montgomery was convicted in 2018 of robbery with a dangerous weapon and attempted assault on a law enforcement officer with s firearm, among other changes in 2018, according to state records. He served six years and 11 months in prison and on parole before his post-release supervision, ended in June 2023, those records show.

2nd Raleigh killing in 8 hours

About eight hours earlier, police found another man with multiple gunshot wounds.

Police found Jose Ignacio Marquez-Diaz, 23, in the 3300 block of Quail Hollow Drive at 4:43 a.m. That’s in north Raleigh near Interstate 440.

Police didn’t provide any other details about the shooting in announcing Banegas-Mencia’s arrest.

There have been at least eight homicides in Raleigh this year, according to Raleigh Police Department reports. Police have made arrests in seven of those cases.
