Carrboro police on Monday identified a man fatally shot at an apartment complex last week as 41-year-old Juan Maldonado Espinosa.

Investigators are still looking for any witnesses after Maldonado Espinosa was found shot to death at Estes Park Apartments late Wednesday night.

Officers responded around 11:40 pm to Building C in the complex of two-story, red brick apartments at 306 Estes Drive Extension.

It was the second shooting with an injury, fatal or non-fatal, in Carrboro this year, according to police. There were no shootings with injuries in the town last year.

911 callers describe silver car

Orange County 911 began getting calls from neighbors who heard the gunshots around 11:37 p.m. A group of people were trying to help Maldonado Espinosa, who was lying in the parking lot outside Building C, two callers said.

One described seeing a silver car with two or three people inside drive away from the complex after the shooting, according to the calls released Thursday. Police later reported the car might be a four-door sedan, possibly a gray or silver Honda Civic that had been reported stolen, according to emergency radio communication.

At least two callers said they heard five or six gunshots, but did not see what happened.

“I don’t think they’re moving at all. They’re just laying there,” one caller said. Other people were coming out of the apartments and gathering around the person in the parking lot, they said.

Carrboro Police Chief Chris Atack said Thursday he could not confirm some of the callers’ information but said police were seeking a woman who is a “person of interest” in the case. He said in an email Monday he had nothing else he could release about that.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has information to contact Investigator R. Trombley at 919-918-7415, or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515. Crime Stoppers allows tipsters to remain anonymous if they wish.
