75-year-old pedestrian hit and killed on Barwell Road in Raleigh

A 75-year-old man was hit and killed while walking on Barwell Road Friday night.

Billie Wise, 75, was walking west from the wood lines toward the road at 9:53 p.m. Friday, according to a Raleigh Police news release.

“As Wise reached the roadway, the preliminary investigation indicates Wise stumbled into the northbound lane,” according to the news release. He was wearing dark colored clothes, according to the release.

The driver of a Honda Pilot was passing the location at the same time and hit Wise with the vehicle. Wise was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges have been filed and the name of the driver was not immediately available. The Southeast Raleigh street was closed in both directions for several hours Friday night.

The case remains under investigation.

In 2022, there were 27 pedestrian deaths in Raleigh, most occurring in the dark, The News & Observer reported. There were 11 pedestrian fatalities last year.
