33-year-old Raleigh man killed in Durham shooting. Woman also injured.

Police have identified a man fatally shot Sunday on Avondale Drive in Durham as 33-year-old Luis Hernandez of Raleigh.

An off-duty officer heard gunshots at 4:19 a.m. on the 2200 block of Avondale Drive and found a man and woman in a business parking lot who had been shot.

Both were taken to a hospital, where the man was pronounced dead. Police said the woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the crime and say it appears to be an isolated incident. No other details were given.

As part of the investigation, Avondale Drive was closed Sunday from Howard Street to North Roxboro Street.

150 people shot in Durham this year

Last week, Deputy Police Chief Shari Montgomery told the City Council that homicides in Durham are at a 10-year high but consistent with recent years.

As of Aug, 17, 150 people had been shot in the city this year, 22 of them fatally, according to police statistics.
