Autopsies: Man shot multiple times in Hillsborough murders; teen girl only once

Update: Details from a new autopsy were added to the story on Aug. 20, 2025.

An autopsy released Monday shows an eastern North Carolina man died from gunshot wounds to his chest, wrist and hand on a dead-end Hillsborough road in December.

Another autopsy released in August 2025 showed a teen girl who also was killed was shot just once.

Hillsborough police were responding to a call about a gunshot injury when they found DeAnthony Letrelle Morgan, 20, of La Grange, and Zikera Wardlow, 16, of Hillsborough dead on Cardinal Drive near Interstate 85 in Hillsborough.

Morgan was lying dead on the pavement outside a Dodge Charger around 6:40 a.m. Dec. 30, the autopsy says. He was shot four times and also had shrapnel wounds on the right side of his body, “possibly from bullet fragments, glass, or other material from the vehicle.”

Wardlow was found dead inside the car, police have said. Her autopsy released on Aug. 20, 2025, shows she was shot in the upper left arm, but the bullet passed through her arm into her chest, striking her in the heart.

In a 911 call released to The News & Observer, a caller said the car had been there since 8 p.m. Dec. 29 when they heard gunshots. They didn’t call the police, the caller said, because they saw the Charger with its rear lights on and thought the police were already there.

Zikera Wardlow, 16, and De’Anthony Morgan, 20, were fatally shot in a car Dec. 29, 2024, at the end of Cardinal Drive in Hillsborough. Police arrested a suspect in the murders on Jan. 15, 2025.

An investigative report released with the autopsy says a Glock handgun was found on the back floor of the car. Police recovered five bullet casings from the scene, none of which matched the Glock, it says.

Suspected bullet holes were found in the rear passenger window and the rear windshield, the report says.

Kenyon Raishaun Cameron, 19, of Hillsborough, was arrested Jan. 15 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Police have not said whether Cameron knew the victims or provided a motive for the murders. The autopsy cites reports that a 9 mm handgun may have been used in the shooting.

Morgan’s family has said he was a loving uncle to his nephews and newborn niece, and was working two jobs to save money for college while enrolled to study engineering at Lenoir Community College.

Wardlow attended Discovery Charter School in Durham, where she played on the girls basketball team, her family said. She also played basketball while a student at Cedar Ridge High School during the 2023-24 school year.

Cameron is being held without bail in the Orange County jail.

He also has a case pending for a September charge of injury to personal property. He is accused of causing damage to the victim’s Mustang GT in that case, court records show.
