At around 10 p.m., Apex police responded to a disturbance between a father and the child’s maternal grandparents in a custody exchange.

During the dispute, the man “struck and killed” the grandmother with his car, police said.

The father initially fled on foot, but was apprehended shortly after and charged with voluntary manslaughter, police said. He has not been named.

Another occupant in the vehicle also fled on foot, but has not yet been apprehended or identified, police said.

The investigation is ongoing. “Additional charges may still be pending,” police said.
