At least 3 people dead in Durham crash near Roxboro Street. What we know
The State Highway Patrol has released the names of two of the three people killed in a Sunday evening crash near Roxboro Street in northern Durham.
Deputies responded to reports of passengers in two cars firing shots in the 8200 block of Ball Road just before 6:30 p.m., the Durham County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release.
The caller described the cars and their direction of travel, and a deputy began searching for them, according to the release.
“Approximately seven minutes later, the deputy observed two vehicles matching the description in the parking lot of a convenience store,” the release said. “As the deputy entered the parking lot, both vehicles left the convenience store at a high rate of speed.”
The deputy tried to stop one of the cars, a black 2003 Infiniti, but “lost sight of the vehicle,” according to the release.
That’s when the Infiniti crossed the center line while traveling southbound on Roxboro Street near Latta Road, crashing head-on into a black Honda CRV driven by Sandra Marie Moore of Bahama, the Highway Patrol said in a news release Monday.
Moore’s CRV then struck a red Lincoln Navigator driven by David Aguilar Mora of Timberlake, according to the release.
The driver of the Infiniti and the Infiniti’s passenger, Mercedes Toledo-Gross, were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are trying to reach next-of-kin before releasing the driver’s name, the release said.
A deputy was trying to stop the Infiniti in connection with the Ball Road shooting at the time of the crash, the State Highway Patrol said.
Moore was also pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.
All occupants of Mora’s Navigator were taken to Duke Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Deputies said the second car involved in the shooting has not been found. The Highway Patrol said it did not have the ages of the victims involved as of Monday morning, and the Sheriff’s Office did not respond to further inquiries from The News & Observer.
The Highway Patrol and the Sheriff’s Office are both investigating. Law enforcement is searching for a white Audi, though authorities didn’t specify how the Audi was believed to be involved.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 919-560-0880.
