Raleigh releases 1st-quarter crime report: Here’s what the numbers show.
In a first from new Chief Rico Boyce, the Raleigh Police Department released a one-page report Tuesday on crime data during the first quarter of 2025.
The data shows a decrease in aggravated assaults and motor-vehicle thefts, but an increase in homicides and traffic-crash fatalities this year compared to the same period last year.
Raleigh saw 11 homicides during the first three months of the year, compared to nine in the first quarter of 2024.
One of those homicides has been deemed justifiable, or self defense, and eight have been solved by an arrest and involve suspects known to the victim, the report states.
There were eight deadly traffic accidents, up from six in the first quarter of last year.
Aggravated assaults were down by 12% — 221 this year compared to 250 last year — with a 17% decrease in assaults involving firearms. People were shot but survived in 19 of the aggravated assaults this year, compared to 18 last year.
Juveniles were charged in five of the aggravated assaults.
“Many of these investigations are ongoing,” the report states.
Motor vehicle thefts were down by 19%, with the city seeing 477 in the first quarter of 2025 compared to 592 in 2024’s first quarter.
Police have recovered 421 stolen vehicles, and the department’s Auto Theft Task Force continues to work with other agencies and technology to mitigate car theft, according to the report.
The report also notes the department confiscated 360 firearms and made 151 referrals to its ACORNS unit, which pairs social workers with police officers to help residents in crisis, though the report doesn’t givedetails on the circumstances of those confiscations or referrals.
Police have not yet responded to follow-up questions from The News & Observer about the report.
