NYC police arrest suspect accused of murder in Raleigh

The New York City Police Department on Wednesday arrested a suspect accused of killing a man in Raleigh in June.

Justin Malik York, 30, faces charges of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the Raleigh Police Department.

He is accused of killing Ra’kel Olajuwan Kirtz, 26, in a June 19 shooting on the 4500 block of Colscott Place.

Kirtz was “a very outgoing, funny people person that stood out VERY differently from others,” according to his obituary. “He had a very caring heart and always looked out for others before himself.”

York will be extradited to North Carolina.

Police released no other information such as a possible motive for the killing and whether there mght be other suspects.

The day of the shooting, a Wake County judge had issued an arrest order for York, accusing him of tampering with the strap of his ankle monitor and violating pretrial release conditions, court records show.

York had pleaded not guilty to multiple firearm-related charges in April 2024 and had been awaiting trial.
