Raleigh Police and the Wake County school system are investigating after shots were fired and multiple fights broke out after a Friday night football event at Southeast Raleigh High School.
Teams from eight high schools scrimmaged in front of fans at the preseason football jamboree hosted by Southeast Raleigh High. After the jamboree ended, multiple fights erupted in the parking lot and an individual discharged a firearm, according to a letter Southeast Raleigh High Principal George Harden sent to families.
Law enforcement officers, Wake County school security, and school administrators responded and cleared the campus on Rock Quarry Road. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made, Harden said.
“We are currently working together with WCPSS Security and law enforcement to investigate the incident,” Harden said in the letter sent on Saturday. “Once the investigation is complete, any WCPSS students involved will be disciplined in accordance with Board policy.
“In addition, per North Carolina General Statute § 14‑269.2, possessing or carrying a weapon on educational property is a criminal offense that can result in serious legal consequences.”
Rebuilding school’s image
The incident comes as Southeast Raleigh High works to rebuild its image following a fatal 2023 stabbing on campus. A 14-year-old student was charged with fatally stabbing a 16-year-old student and wounding another 16-year-old during a fight in the school’s gym.
Since the homicide, Southeast Raleigh High and the school system have partnered to promote the school.
“While this event included athletes and fans from seven schools in our area, our expectations for the Bulldog students and families remain the same,” Harden said. “The expectation to exhibit P.R.I.D.E remains. Students and fans are to model Positivity, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Excellence to proudly represent our school before, during, and after all events.”
