The family of a man stabbed to death at a Raleigh convenience store has accepted a settlement of over $1 million, according to their attorneys.
Mark T. Garrity Jr. was stabbed at Taz’s Supermarket on South Wilmington Street in April 2023. Taiseer Zarka, the former owner of the convenience store, was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to over five years in prison.
The wrongful death lawsuit was filed by Garrity’s mother, Amy Garrity, in April 2025 against Zarka, his company Jasmen Corporation, and its landlord, Phillip Horwitz.
The defendants have agreed to pay $1.3 million to settle the lawsuit.
The lawsuit stated that Taz’s Supermarket was regularly and repeatedly the site of criminal activity, generating over 900 emergency calls in the five years leading up to Garrity’s death. On April 6, 2023, Garrity was shopping there when Zarka approached him with a knife, accused him of shoplifting and stabbed him three times.
“This journey has been one of insurmountable anguish and grief but also one of hope,” Amy Garrity said. “While nothing can replace Mark and the love we shared as a family, this resolution honors his memory, brings a sense of justice to his loved ones, and works to prevent senseless tragedies like this from happening in the future.”
