A week after a Garner man was fatally shot on his way home from work, police have expanded the area where they are asking for the public’s help.
Joseph “Joey” Adams, 41, died Feb. 9 after someone shot into his red Honda Accord multiple times on Timber Drive near Vandora Springs Road that evening, The News & Observer previously reported.
Another driver called 911 about 7:15 p.m., initially thinking the car was disabled, according to Capt. David Casteline, a spokesperson for the Garner Police Department.
“That motorist pulled in behind the Accord; at that time, the Accord began rolling backwards and struck the assisting vehicle,” Casteline said. “The good samaritan approached the vehicle and observed that Joey, Joseph, was the only person inside the vehicle and he was hunched over and bleeding.”
Adams later died at the hospital, he said.
Police first asked for the public’s help the day after the shooting, sharing a phone number and noting that “seemingly minor details” could help solve the case, according to a news release. By last Friday, they’d established an anonymous tip line and asked drivers who were in the area of Timber Drive between Tryon and White Oak roads that evening to submit dash camera footage.
In a roughly 7 1/2 minute Facebook live Monday, Casteline renewed that call for help.
“Although the incident occurred near Timber Drive and Vandora Springs Road, we are expanding our search in hopes of uncovering critical leads that will help us identify the person or persons responsible for Joey’s death,” he said.
Now, anyone who traveled between Hammond Road and Interstate 40 to Timber Drive and White Oak Road from 6:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 should submit dash cam footage, according to Casteline.
“Our investigators have followed up on hundreds of leads and are continuously reviewing video footage that we’ve received,” he said. “We know someone saw something. Someone saw a vehicle. Someone may have seen the shooting.”
Adams was married and had five children, according to Casteline. A Gofundme for Adams’ wife, which had raised $16,665 of its $18,000 goal as of Tuesday afternoon, said he was on his way home from work when he was killed.
“Joey was a hardworking man with a warm spirit and a kind heart,” Casteline said. “His family and the Garner community are mourning his loss, and they deserve answers about who took Joey away from them through this act of violence.”
Adams, a native of Lancaster, Ohio, graduated from Garner High School and had most recently worked as a hydrovac operator for an environmental services company, according to his Facebook page. He married his wife in June 2020, the page states.
“We are asking our community, if you were in that area during that time, please reach out to us,” Casteline said. “You may have that key information that we need, information that Joey’s family needs.”
Anyone with information can call the Adams case tipline at 919-890-7318 or email inv@garnernc.gov to reach the police department’s investigative team, according to Casteline.
