A shooting in a Food Lion parking lot in North Raleigh on Tuesday morning left one person injured, according to the Raleigh Police Department.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting outside the Food Lion at 5633 Creedmoor Road just after 10:30 a.m. and found multiple shell casings and a discarded firearm, Chief Rico Boyce said.
Witnesses told police that people in two vehicles had pulled into the parking lot, got into an argument and then started shooting at each other.
The driver of a blue Ford F-150 pickup truck, who police identified Wednesday as 21-year-old Jalen Watson, fled the scene and collided with another car just down the road at the intersection of Millbrook and Winthrop roads. The occupant of the other vehicle, who police said was not involved in the Food Lion incident, was not injured in the crash.
Watson walked into a local hospital with a gunshot wound, where he was identified by authorities as the individual allegedly involved in the shooting.
He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to sell and deliver. He is also charged with an outstanding warrant for two counts of possession of marijuana with intent to sell and deliver.
Police are still seeking the driver and any passengers of the second vehicle involved in the shootout, a silver Nissan Rogue, and are asking the public to contact RPD if they believe have information.
In a news conference Tuesday morning, Boyce denounced the “recent violence” in Raleigh across the past four days. He said RPD would be releasing the most recent violent crime data for the city in the coming days, noting that crime was trending down, but said officials are “talking heavy” about plans for the summer to combat gun violence.
“The Raleigh Police Department will not tolerate this level of violence in our city. We’re going to work vigorously to identify those who are responsible. We’re going to work with our law enforcement partners, with the Wake County District Attorney, and the U.S. attorneys office to make sure we hold those individuals accountable and make sure that they receive jail time for their activities.”
