Police filed another charge Thursday against one of two teenagers arrested after a shooting near Carrboro High School this month.

Police also charged two more students in the April incident and in connection with a previously unreported “criminal violation” that police say happened at Carrboro High School on March 6.

The April 14 incident sent Carrboro High students into lockdown after a school resource officer and students having lunch outside reported hearing shots near the school around noon. Police who responded to the area later said the shots came from the woods next to apartments at 180 BPW Club Road near the school.

The high school is located on Rock Haven Road, off Smith Level Road just south of downtown. Students at nearby Culbreth Middle and Frank Porter Graham Bilingüe Elementary schools were also kept inside while police investigated the incident.

The four teenagers who are charged have not been named because of their ages, police said. They are:

  • A 17-year-old identified as a Carrboro High student, who was previously charged with felony possession of a handgun with an altered serial number and misdemeanor possession of a handgun by a minor in the April 14 incident. The teen was charged this week with felony possession of a firearm on educational property for bringing a weapon to school on March 6.
  • One 16-year-old was also charged with juvenile warrants alleging felony possession of a handgun with an altered serial number and misdemeanor possession of a handgun by a minor after the April 14 incident.
  • A second 16-year-old charged this week is a Carrboro High student and is facing a misdemeanor charge of being a minor in possession of a firearm, and felony possession of a firearm with an altered serial number in the April 14 incident.
  • A 15-year-old Carrboro High student also has been charged in connection with the March 6 incident. That student is accused of felony possession of a firearm on educational property.

Carrboro police are continuing to investigate both incidents and could file additional charges, according to a news release.

Anyone with information about either incident can call the Carrboro Police Department at 919-918-7397 or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515.
