Apex car wash evacuated after person made political threats, police say

A person is in custody after making threats against President Donald Trump at an Apex car wash, according to the Apex Police Department.

Tidal Wave Auto Spa was evacuated off Lake Pine Drive “due to a violent individual who made public threats,” later described as “violent threats that were political in nature, police said in a Wednesday statement on Facebook. The threats prompted a multi-agency response and caused concern as helicopters circled overhead.

Apex police told The News & Observer while it could not say what the threats were or how they were made, they were “violent enough” to elicit a police response. The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, Secret Service and FBI responded as is standard for threats made against the President.

ABC11, The N&O’s newsgathering partner, said the messages were found written on a car’s windshield, prompting a bomb squad to check out the car for any explosives as a precaution.

Police stressed there is no active threat in the area.

“If there were any risk beyond the immediate car wash area, we would have sent out a text alert notification right away,” the police department said on Facebook.

As of 5:30 p.m., an active police presence remains while authorities investigate, police said. Residents are encouraged to avoid the area.
