Two men got into a heated altercation and shot at each other at a Dollar General in Nash County Saturday morning, according to the Nash County Sheriff’s Office. Both men were killed.

Deputies responded to reports of gunfire at the Dollar General on South White Street in the town of Whitakers around 10 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office said in a Saturday afternoon statement on Facebook.

There, deputies found one man, Herbert Earl Lawrence Jr., with a gunshot wound to the chest. They began life-saving measures, the sheriff’s office said, but Lawrence died from his injuries.

Deputies found the second man, Wilbert Silver III, at the intersection of Nash and White Streets, also suffering from a gunshot wound, the sheriff’s office said. Despite efforts to save his life, Silver also died from injuries.

The sheriff’s office said its preliminary investigation showed Lawrence and Silver “were involved a heated altercation that escalated into an exchange of gunfire.” The Sheriff’s Office did not release the two men’s ages. The investigation remains ongoing.
