Opening of two new Garner schools delayed a year

Wake County school administrators said Tuesday that the opening of two new Garner schools will be delayed a year to 2018 to accommodate changes in the renovation plans at Garner High School and Vandora Springs Elementary School.

Both South Garner High School and Bryan Road Elementary School will officially open in the 2018-19 school year. The one-year delay will allow their buildings to be used by students from Garner High and Vandora Springs while those schools’ campuses are renovated.

Administrators say students need to be off campus because new plans will result in more new construction and demolition of existing buildings than previously planned.

Garner High students will spend both the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years at South Garner. The original plan was to only be off the Garner High campus for the 2016-17 school year.

Vandora Springs students will spend the 2017-18 school year at Bryan Road. The original plan had them staying on campus during the renovations.

Administrators also said Tuesday that the opening of a new elementary school in Holly Springs will be delayed a year, to August 2018, because of difficulty finding a suitable location.
