After student brings gun to Broughton High School, campus has brief lockdown
UPDATE: Police have charged three teenagers in connection with the incident.
A Broughton High School student brought a gun to campus on Monday, putting the school on a brief lockdown.
In an email Monday to parents, Broughton Principal Elena Ashburn told families that the Raleigh school went into a code yellow lockdown while law enforcement investigated a report of a person with a firearm on campus.
“After a combined investigation conducted by Raleigh Police officers, Wake County Security Staff, and school administration, we have confirmed that a student had a weapon on campus for a short period of time before leaving campus,” Ashburn said. “The students involved have all been located by law enforcement.”
Laura Hourigan, a Raleigh Police spokeswoman, confirmed that the weapon found on the student was a firearm.
There will be additional security on campus Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning as an added precaution, according to Ashburn. Broughton is located on St. Mary’s Street near downtown Raleigh.
The incident comes amid a spike in guns being found in schools in North Carolina and the Nov. 30 mass shooting at a high school in Michigan.
On Monday afternoon, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a report of shots being fired outside West Charlotte High School, The Charlotte Observer reported. No one was injured, according to police.
