Oberlin Middle School in Raleigh dismissed students early at 11 a.m. Wednesday due to a suspected gas leak.

In a message to families, the school said that around 9:30 a.m. there was a strong smell of gas in the building. The school made the decision to evacuate the building and have staff and students wait outdoors while the Raleigh Fire Department investigated.

School buses will provide transportation home for students who ride by bus, and parents will be able to pick up their students for rides out as usual. The school said it will follow standard carpool procedures using Sanderson Drive, with a right only onto Oberlin.

School staff will stay with students at school until arrangements have been made for everyone to get home safely.

All after school activities are canceled Wednesday at the school.
