Wake County town will finally get a high school bearing its name
The fast-growing western Wake County town of Morrisville will now have a high school with its name on it.
The Wake County school board voted Tuesday to use Morrisville High as the name of a new school scheduled to open in 2027. Town leaders had lobbied for Morrisville to be used as opposed to naming the school after a roadway or other geographic feature.
School board vice chair Chris Heagarty said the new high school is only made possible through the efforts of groups such as the town to provide the land.
“It took a lot of creative thought, and there are so many people who are very excited about this,” said Heagarty, whose district includes much of Morrisville.
Now only the Wake County towns of Wendell and Zebulon don’t have a high school named after their municipalities. Neither have a district high school in their town limits.
Finding land for Morrisville schools
Due to high land prices, Morrisville didn’t get its first district high school until this school year when the Wake Early College of Information and Biotechnologies opened on Wake Technical Community College’s RTP campus.
The school board recently finished acquiring another 34 acres on Wake Tech’s RTP campus for a second high school — Morrisville High. Due to the small size of the site, the high school could use a baseball field that might be built in Mills Park in Cary.
In May, the school board’s facilities committee had recommended using Morrisville High out of three options suggested by staff. The other choices were Paramount Parkway High and Parkside High.
Paramount Parkway is the main road that would be used to access the new school. Parkside High was suggested because of the school’s proximity to Research Triangle Park.
