2 Charlotte-area educators under investigation for Charlie Kirk comments

Gaston County Schools and a Huntersville charter school say they’re investigating social media posts from teachers after conservative media personality Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

Kirk was killed Wednesday during an event at a Utah college when a single bullet struck his neck, the Associated Press reported. Social media posts came soon after, with Kirk’s supporters calling attention to remarks that appeared celebratory or making light of Kirk’s death.

“Hi @GastonSchools, this your teacher??” popular X account LibsofTiktok posted Wednesday evening. Attached were screenshots of a Facebook post allegedly made by a Gaston County Schools teaching assistant.

The Facebook post used an offensive term and questioned why people would mourn Kirk’s death.

Around 2.3 million people had viewed the LibsofTiktok post by Thursday afternoon. The account has 4.4 million followers.

Gaston County Schools told The Charlotte Observer it is investigating the incident.

“We are aware of the post, and our Human Resources Department is reviewing the matter,” Gaston County Schools Chief Communications Officer Todd Hagans told the Observer in an email.

Another post on X alleged an educator at Lake Norman Charter in Huntersville posted a photo of Kirk on Facebook after his assassination, telling him to “go to hell.” The Facebook post was later deleted. The X post had 43,000 likes and 1.2 million views as of Thursday afternoon.

A representative of Lake Norman Charter told The Observer, “We are aware of the social media post, and an investigation into the matter has been launched.”

The staff member has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation, according to the spokesperson.

The Carolina Panthers on Thursday announced the firing of a communications department employee over a post about Kirk’s death.
