While Triangle universities are largely back to normal operations, public K-12 schools in the area are still dealing with the fallout from last weekend’s winter storm.

On Monday and Tuesday, school districts either switched to remote learning or canceled school altogether. Across the region, some roads are still slick with ice and snow, with the potential for overnight refreezing. On Tuesday afternoon, school districts started to announce their plans for Wednesday.

Here’s what schools have announced so far for Wednesday:

K-12 school districts

  • Chapel Hill-Carrboro (updated at 3:02 p.m.): Schools will open on time Wednesday. The school district said that thanks to above-freezing temperatures on Tuesday, roads, bus routes, walkways and parking lots are considered safe. For staff who live outside the school district and feel it would still be unsafe to travel Wednesday morning, the district urges a conversation with a supervisor.
  • Chatham County (updated at 5:11 p.m.): Schools will open on a two-hour delay Wednesday. The district says that though road conditions have greatly improved, drivers should still use caution.
  • Durham Public Schools (updated 4:53 p.m.): Durham schools will open on time Wednesday. It is still a planned early-release day.
  • Johnston County (updated at 2:25 p.m.): Schools will be closed on Wednesday for a remote learning day. All extracurricular activities have been canceled.
  • Orange County (updated at 5:09 p.m.): Schools will be closed on Wednesday due to icy conditions on secondary roads in the county. It is an optional staff work day.
  • Wake County (updated at 3:55 p.m.): Schools will open on a two-hour delay Wednesday due to the continued threat of black ice.

Colleges and universities

  • UNC-Chapel Hill: UNC has been operating normally since noon Tuesday.

  • Duke University: The university has previously said that classes will be held as scheduled Wednesday.
