Son of mass shooter exposes himself, tries luring student into van, Kentucky cops say

The son of a man who killed eight people at his former Louisville workplace in 1989 has been accused of exposing himself at a college campus in Kentucky.

James Wesbecker, 52, has been banned from the University of Louisville campus since 1995 due to previous indecent exposure acts, but he recently returned to the grounds of the college, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.

Surveillance footage shows Wesbecker approaching a female student on Jan. 13 in a teal blue minivan and exposing his genitals, police said. He came back to the university three days later, when he attempted to persuade a different female student to enter his van, according to police.

Both students reported the incidents to police, and their descriptions of the van and suspect were similar, police said. Both women pointed out Wesbecker out of a photo lineup and he was arrested Tuesday, an arrest citation states.

Wesbecker was charged with indecent exposure and a $2,000 cash bond has been set for his release from the Louisville jail. Wesbecker has been charged with indecent exposure “dozens of times,” according to a 2017 Courier-Journal article.

WHAS reported Wesbecker is the son of Joseph Wesbecker, who opened fire at Standard Gravure in 1989. The elder Wesbecker was armed with five guns, including an AK-47, when he methodically shot his former co-workers on Sept. 14, 1989, according to Herald-Leader archives.

The shooting at the printing company lasted around a half-hour, ending after Wesbecker used a 9mm assault pistol to shoot and kill himself. In addition to killing eight people, he also injured 12 in what is still the deadliest mass shooting in Kentucky’s history.
